Death of Father Britt

Near the hour of 12 o’ clock, Wednesday night, Jan. 9, at his late home two miles north and one west of Malvern, occurred the death of Leroy Britt, one of the first settlers of Mills County. Mr. Britt had been failing in health for some time, due mostly to the accumulation of years, and yet his death came as a surprise, comparatively few knowing of his last illness. The death of Mr. Britt removes from the community not only an honorable, upright and greatly respected citizen, but one who in his years of activity exerted a large and wholesome influence and aided in the development of his grand country at a time when the influence of such men was much needed and of incalculable benefit. Mr. Britt was one of the charter members of the M.E. Church of Malvern and when able to do so was very active in the work as the earlier members of that organization will recall.

The funeral, which was held at the residence on Friday, was largely attended and despite the bitter cold a long procession followed the remains to the Malvern Cemetery where interment took place. Rev. C.W. Brewer conducted the services.

The family has kindly furnished us the following facts:

“Leroy Britt was born in Tennessee Sept. 15, 1811, and died at his home in Mills County Jan. 9, 1895, aged 83 years and 4 months less 6 days. He was married to Rhoda Seaton Sept. 25, 1833, in Tennessee; moved to Missouri in 1846, and to Mills County July 11, 1852. He settled upon the farm where he continued to reside for over 42 years, and where he lived until his death. Eleven children were born out of this wedlock, seven of whom are still living. Deceased joined the M.E. Church in 1855, and lived a consistent member until his death. He was ready; ‘his house was in order,’ he has ‘entered into rest.’ The aged wife and children remain on this side of the river, but we cherish the hope that we shall with them in a little while meet Father Britt in heaven.”

Mr. Britt had three sons, Hon. T.M. Britt, Mills County’s Representative for two years, one of the leading men of the county; Rev. Dr. Frank Britt, of Plattsmouth, Presiding Elder of the Nebraska District of Nebraska Conference, and Dr. Britt, a prominent physician of Kansas City. Of the whereabouts of the daughters we have not been advised.

Incidents in a Pioneer’s Life

A warm personal friend of Mr. Leroy Britt gives us some incidents of his life that will be of interest to our readers. Mr. Britt was a soldier in the Blackhawk war and from the government received for his services a land warrant which he located in Mills County, the land constituting the farm on which he lived almost a half century. He was also one of the first two white men to cross the river at Dubuque where they mined for a time. He afterwards returned to Galena, Ill., from where he came to Dubuque, and from the latter place rode alone on horseback to Tennessee, when nearly the entire county through which he passed was mostly inhabited by Indians.

Mrs. Rhoda Britt

Rhoda Britt was born March 9, 1812, at Huntsville, Alabama, and died May 7, 1903, after a few days illness. All that loving hands and medical skill could do could accomplish no relief; she peacefully passed away away Thursday afternoon. Her last conscious hours were occupied in repeating songs, one especially being “I Am Going Home to Die No More.”

She was married to Leroy Britt Sept. 25, 1833, whom she survived eight years, his death occurring Jan. 9, 1895. She was the mother of eleven children, five of whom are living. One son, now deceased, was a Methodist minister. The deceased, with her husband, came to Iowa July 11, 1852, locating in Mills county on the old home north of Malvern where she resided until the past three years, those being spent with her daughter, Mrs. M.E. Ranne.

She was a woman of large experience and broad sympathy, well schooled in the hardships of pioneers. She was of a home loving disposition, her chief joy and delight being in the companionship of her family and in ministering to their every want, unassuming in her life but ever ready to do good.

She joined the Methodist church when 17 years old and has always been a consistent member.

The funeral was from the Methodist church in this city last Saturday at 10 a.m. conducted by the pastor, Rev. W.H. Cable, and was largely attended by friends and relatives, many of them being from a distance.
Seaton, Rhoda Ann (I324)

Thomas Britt, a native of Tennessee, was the son of Leroy Britt and Rhoda Anne Seaton. They came to Iowa about 1845, first settling in western Iowa at the time of the expulsion of the Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois and then moving to Glenwood in Mills County where Thomas became a farmer.

He married Martha Dunnagan, a native of Ireland who was a resident of Glenwood, on 16 Feb 1859. They had three children; Maude C Britt (Donner), Dr. William H Britt, and Lewis P Britt (who died at the age of 8 years).

He served during the war as a member of the 29th Iowa regiment which was made up largely of Mills county men. He enlisted as a 4th Corporal on 18 Aug 1862 at the age of 26 years. Mustered in Co B 29th Iowa Infantry on 15 Nov 1862. Promoted 3rd Corporal 1 Jan 1963, to 5th Sergeant on 3 Jul 1863, and to 1st Sergeant on 15 Oct 1863. Mustered out 10 Aug 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana.

He returned to Mills County after the war and continued to farm. His wife, Martha, died in 1890.

Thomas was twice elected to serve as a representative in the Iowa legislature. He served from 1892-1896. His special duty was to see that the institution for feeble minded at Glenwood was well treated in the matter of appropriations.

In 1896 Thomas married Mrs. Flora Dunlap. Flora brought at least three step sons to the marriage: William, Ray, and Harry.

Thomas died in 1906 at his home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he had lived since 1900. He had been sick for some time with the disease "creeping paralysis" and was partially paralyzed for 6 months prior to his death. He was a member of Milton Sommers Post #204 Malvern.

Received an email from Tom Allred

Comments: I have been reviewing the letters my father, Royal Allred, wrote home to his mother during WWII. In one of the letters, dated November 26, 1942, mentions that he met up with Garth Massey. He says, "Well I have found Garth Massey and we are going to church next Sunday. It sure seems good to get with someone you can talk to that speaks your own language."

Dad was in Chicago, Illinois, being trained as a radio operator.

In your history of Garth Massey, do you have any additional information of their relationship or the nature of the training and school they were attending?

Regards,

Tom Allred

131 12 Dec 2021 - I currently don't have a good source to prove that Lorana's parents are Amos Sargent and Elizabeth Cherry. There is circumstantial evidence based on the 1870 census where she is living in the same household as Amos & Elizabeth along with her children Anna, Daniel, Francis, & Amos Haynes, and her son Silas Wharton.

13 Dec 2021 - No luck finding her on the 1880 census.

133 1850 Census - Samuel's wife appears as "Sarah", age 30 (1820) born in Maryland. This is too young to be the mother of the first two children listed on the census.
1860 Census - Samuel's wife appears as "Mary", age 38 (1822) born in Ohio. Maybe not his wife.
1870 Census - Samuel's wife appears as "Sarah A", age 54 (1816), born in New Jersey.

Based on the estimated birth year of 1832 for Jermma Myers being born, this marriage is a likely match.
