193 | 9 Feb 2012 Obituary from Deseret News Duane Kimball Gadd, age 50, passed away February 7, 2012. Duane was born November 23, 1961 to Melvin D. and Rosemary K. Gadd. Duane attended schools in the Bountiful area and graduated from the University of Utah with a Master's Degree in Education. Duane married Janice Abbott, February 14, 1985. They have two daughters, Amy and Danielle. Duane adored his daughters. He was devoted to his family and they spent many hours together hiking, bicycling, camping, skiing and boating. Duane was an avid hiker. He hiked the mountain areas throughout Davis County constantly. He hiked and backpacked in many areas throughout the surrounding states, but his favorite area remained the Uinta Mountains. Duane's wife and daughters often accompanied him, and the family dog was always at his side. Duane was especially close to his father and his parents accompanied the family on many of their camping and hiking trips. Duane had a passion for teaching. He taught science at Millcreek Jr. High for many years and touched the lives for good of hundreds of young people. He was committed to excellence in his teaching and spent countless hours in preparation. Over the years he also mentored the chess club and coached basketball and track. Duane was never idle. He had a thirst for knowledge and was never without a book or two to read. Words cannot express how much he will be missed. Duane is survived by his wife and two daughters; his parents; his brothers, Paul (Holly) and Brian (Dalynn); sister, Leslie (Rock) Thompson; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, where a visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Interment-Lakeview Cemetery. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com . In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Davis County or Summit County Search and Rescue. Snapshot of Millcreek Junior High Web Site Newspaper Article: Lost Farmington hiker OK after canyon rescue Published: Thursday, July 6 2006 FARMINGTON: A 44-year-old man who became lost in a thunderstorm while hiking in Farmington Canyon Tuesday was helped off the mountain by Davis County Search and Rescue crews early Wednesday. Kaysville resident Duane Gadd was near the weather tower at Francis Peak when a storm full of lightning rolled through. He tried to take a shortcut to the bottom rather than stay on the main trail and ended up at the bottom of Webb Canyon, said Davis County Sheriff's Capt. Kenny Payne. Search and rescue crews were called at 9:16 p.m. after the man was able to call his wife with his cell phone and told her he was cold, tired and hungry. But despite having a GPS device with him, Gadd told his wife he was in a different canyon than he really was. The confusion had nine search teams looking through four canyons for him, Payne said. A helicopter from the Department of Public Safety using thermal imaging spotted Gadd at 3:18 a.m. Wednesday. Payne said he had limited food and water, no rain gear and was not prepared to spend the night. Gadd refused medical care once he was brought to the bottom, Payne said. 11 Feb 2012 I just happened to be talking to my mom today on the phone and she told me about Duane's death. She said that she heard he was found dead somewhere near Mirror Lake in the Uinta Mountains and they don't yet know the cause of his death. I can't imagine him being up there this time of year. I got online and found his obituary and learned that his funeral was just 2 hours earlier in Bountiful. Poor family. He was only 50 years, old, the same age as my brother Howard. Mom told me that when Howard was little, Duane hit him on the head with a saw, like a hand saw. He went to Grandma Hall and asked "Why did that boy do that?". Rosemary, his mom, said, "Oh, he didn't mean to." and Grandma Hall replied with something like, "The heck he didn't!". --Calvin Knight | Gadd, Duane Kimball (I521)
